BROMSGROVE Sporting manager Paul Smith was delighted by his side’s impressive finishing in Saturday’s pre-season friendly win over Droitwich.

Chris Lloyd and Jack Wilson walloped home wonderful goals that left boss Smith enthusing: “They were world-class goals. If Lionel Messi had scored them, then everyone would be singing from the rooftops.”

Lloyd lashed home from a corner while Wilson waltzed around no less than five Droitwich players before slotting home.

It followed Sporting’s 10-0 annihilation of AFC Stratford, but Smith insisted: “The score wasn’t important. Getting minutes on the pitch was.”

Following a visit to Alcester Town this week, Sporting’s pre-season programme steps up a gear when they visit Sporting Khalsa on Saturday before entertaining Walsall Wood on Tuesday — with both of their opponents expected to figure prominently in this season’s Midland League title race.

Smith has added to his squad by bringing back former Sporting players such as striker Chris Conway and the left-sided Danny Ludlow, who spent last season at Midland Division One side Pershore Town.

He has also signed central defender Lucky Nwosu who broke into Sporting’s first team late last season.

Smith said: “Lucky has impressed in pre-season and also can operate as a holding midfield player, while both Chris and Danny asked for a chance to come back and have done well.”

However, Smith has parted company with experienced Simon Fitter who has since featured for Highgate United.

Smith explained: “Simon had reached the point in his career where he just wanted to play regular football, which was something I couldn’t promise him. I understand his position and I wish him well for the future.”
