ALVECHURCH manager Ian Long is still hoping to persuade Danny Ashton and Mark Smith to stay for 2016-17 campaign.

The Church boss is keen for most of the squad which finished second in the Midlands Premier last season.

Both are seen as important members of the squad, with the Worcestershire side tipped as favourites for the top spot.

Long said: “I am still talking to Mark and Danny and we’ll see what happens.

“We finished 18 points ahead of the rest of the league so I want to keep everyone from last season.

“There’s definitely more competition for players this season and that makes it more of a challenge.

“Danny is someone who could come into his own now that Chris Field cannot play because of work commitments.

“Last season we had him on the left and right and as centre back, but he probably wants to settle down in one position.”

Church have had a setback as winger Dayle Kenny has opted to join Bromsgrove Sporting, after initially agreeing to sign for Alvechurch.

Meanwhile, Sam Williams and Karl Edwards, who were key members of the squad last season, are set to join Walsall Wood.

Long said: “I would like to place on record my sincere thanks to both lads for the effort they’ve put in over the years.

“They have been a major part of our success and have given me some very special moments.”

Meanwhile, the make up of the Midlands Premier for next season has been proposed, with Tividale, Coventry United, Shawbury United and St Andrews the new arrivals, while Hereford, Continental Star, Bardon Hill and Dunkirk go out.
