DROITWICH swimmer Rebecca Redfern will be hoping to make a splash at the Sainsbury’s 2015 School Games.

The 15-year-old, who races for Worcester Swimming Club, is one of 1,600 athletes taking part in this year’s games.

The Droitwich Spa High School student, who is visually impaired, has been in stunning form this year and set record British times in the S13 category in the 200m and 50m breaststroke (short course) and 100m and 50m breaststroke (long course).

At the ASA National Champions in Sheffield, Redfern raced to victory in the 100m breaststroke with a new GB record (1:20.56) in classification This was hot on the heels in the disability section of the Midland Regional Championships with silver in the 100m backstroke, 50m freestyle and bronze in the 100m freestyle.

At the British International Disability meet, Glasgow, 100m breaststroke, she also won ‘B’ final and won youth gold.

Redfern will be following in the footsteps of some of Britain’s biggest sporting stars including Paralympic champions Hannah Cockroft, Ellie Simmonds and Jonnie Peacock, world-record breaking swimmer Adam Peaty, heptathlete Katarina Johnson-Thompson, World Junior Champion heptathlete and high jumper Morgan Lake and sprinter Adam Gemili, who all competed at the School Games before going on to elite success with Team GB and ParalympicsGB.

At the event, Rebecca will experience the excitement of competing at the highest level and will live within the Athletes’ Village, attend show-stopping opening and closing ceremonies and perform in front of a crowd of thousands at world class sports facilities in Manchester.

She said: “This will be my first time competing at the School Games, and I’m really excited to have been picked to be part of a winning team.”

Alongside the competing athletes there will be 400 young volunteers bringing the Sainsbury’s 2015 School Games to life. Young reporters will be among the journalists reporting the action and many of the officials and coaches will also be young people.
