A new state-of-the-art hospital for NHS patients who require eye treatment has opened its doors.

The hospital, which is part of one of the nation's leading providers of NHS eye services, Spamedica, is now taking in patients from Herefordshire and Worcestershire.

The new building is located just off the M5 on Bridgewater Road in Worcester.

The facility specialises in cataract surgery and YAG capsulotomy, and aims to reduce waiting times to four to eight weeks, and provide high quality treatment.

The hospital also offers a free door-to-door transport service for patients with mobility difficulties.

Patients referred to cataract surgery can decide on their hospital of choice, enabling them to pick the options most suitable for their needs with advice from their optician or GP.

SpaMedica boasts five-star reviews from over 16,000 patients on the NHS UK website, and has been recognised for having some of the lowest complication rates nationally.

It operates over 50 hospitals across the UK, 35 of which have been assessed by the Care Quality Commission, the industry's regulator.

Thirteen of the clinics are rated as 'Outstanding', while 22 hold the 'Good' rating.

The new hospital's manager, Samantha Smith, said: "It’s fantastic to open our doors in Worcester and welcome patients from across the region.

"The hospital is in a great location, just a short hop off the M5, making it convenient for the wider West Midlands area – and we offer a free transport service for those who need it, too.

"Many patients are unaware they have the right to choose where they go for treatment – they can simply speak to their local optician or GP to request a referral to us."

She added: "At SpaMedica, we’re able to offer appointments in just four to eight weeks, and our dedicated team of skilled surgeons and healthcare professionals are ready to provide personalised care and deliver truly life-changing surgery.

"It’s not ‘just’ about improving vision – we’re committed to helping patients get back their independence and quality of life as quickly as possible.”

Patients suspecting they have cataracts are encouraged to seek an optician for an eye check.
