A coach full of school children was left in a terrifying ordeal after a tree branch crashed through its windscreen during storm Pia.

The Bromsgrove Bus and Coaches vehicle was taking pupils from Mappleborough Green School in Redditch to Mappleborough Green Church when the incident happened at around 1.15pm on Thursday, December 21.

The coach was driving along the Warwick Highway near the A435 and The Dog pub when the driver and passengers heard an "almighty bang" as a branch shattered the windscreen.

The driver, who asked to remain anonymous, said: "I heard an almighty bang. It happened so fast. I was covered in glass with a branch approximately four inches in diameter almost touching my head.

"I was more concerned that should I have been seconds later passing through or if the branch had come down further back on the coach, the situation could have been really bad."

Luckily, the driver and the passengers were unharmed during the incident, but the coach suffered damage to the bodywork.

The trip was also cancelled with the driver remaining shaken up after the terrifying ordeal and reminding people to be careful on the roads during storms as they can be unpredictable.

The driver added: "On my way to the school, tree surgeons were at the exact spot cutting a fallen tree. I was very shocked that once they had left and I passed this time with a coach full of passengers such a large branch could come through with such force.

"I am still a bit shaken up from the incident and this has affected my driving confidence as I feel very wary when I'm driving since the incident."
