A popular chippy in Bromsgrove is handing out free meals on Christmas Day to help vulnerable residents.

Charford Fish Bar on Austin Road will be offering warm food to those who are struggling this festive season in the hope of spreading goodwill and supporting the wider community.

Residents will be able to select from three menu choices including doner kebab meat and chips, chicken kebab meat and chips or sausage, chips and curry sauce.

The family-run business has been a staple part of the town for more than 20 years with the fish and chip shop running a similar scheme last year with the help of Louise Hall.

Owner of Charford Fish Bar, Ifty Ahmed, said: “The scheme was really popular last time especially with families and elderly people. There are so many people struggling at the moment and probably even more residents in need than ever before so we decided we should run it again.

“We really wanted to do something to help those who can’t afford a Christmas meal and I realised that when we work as a community, we get things done quicker and can support more people.

“When you help others, it’s a real feel good factor and I just love being part of this great community.”

As well as the shop being open between 12pm and 2pm to collect the meals, there will also be a number of dedicated volunteers on hand to deliver food to those who need it.

There is a pre-order system in place, but Mr Ahmed has stressed that walk-ins will also be welcome on the day.

He said: “We have had a lot of interest and bookings already and I want to let people know that their privacy will be respected.

“Although people can book in advance, everyone is welcome even if you walk in on Christmas Day. We understand that people’s circumstances can change overnight so I’m not putting a deadline on it.”

People are being asked to spread the message to try and reach as many people as possible before Christmas Day.

Anyone who is interested is asked to call 07563 789 176 to book or visit the shop on Monday, December 25.

Mr Ahmed added: “I also want to say a huge thank you to all the volunteers who are helping with the project.

“I am really grateful for all the work you do to support the community.”
