A DRIVER had a 'medical episode' before a crash on an A-road near Droitwich.

Ambulance staff checked over the man at the roadside but he did not wish to go to hospital after the crash on the A38.

The dark-coloured Vauxhall crashed into a street sign near the Copcut roundabout on Wednesday evening (August 16).

The car's front bumper was damaged along with the sign's pole with traffic cones and a cordon placed around the vehicle.

West Mercia Police, West Midlands Ambulance Service and Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service were all called to the crash.

A spokesperson for West Mercia Police said: "We received a call at around 5.20pm from somebody reporting a car that had collided into a  street sign.

"Our officers attended to find one man in the vehicle who had suffered a medical episode that meant he had driven into the sign."

Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service said the man managed to get himself safely out of the car.

A spokesperson said: "Two Droitwich Fire Station crews attended the A38 near the Copcut roundabout where a car had collided with off-road signage.

“No people were trapped and a male casualty was left in the care of the ambulance service.

“The highways agency was requested to attend due to the sign damage and recovery of the vehicle was left with the police."

Two ambulances, a paramedic officer and an air ambulance critical care car all attended the crash.

A spokesperson for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: "We were called to reports of an RTC at the junction of the A38 and Addyes Way in Droitwich.

"Two ambulances, a paramedic officer and the Midlands Air Ambulance Critical Care Car from Strensham were sent to the scene where, on arrival, crews found one car had been involved in a collision.

"The driver, a man, had suffered a suspected medical episode at the wheel and, after treatment from ambulance staff, did not wish to go to hospital and so was given self-care advice and discharged at the scene."
