STAFF at a popular Bromsgrove museum have been left heartbroken after a historic building was set alight in a suspected arson attack.

At around 9pm on Thursday, June 8 three fire crews rushed to Avoncroft Museum in Stoke Heath after a building, which is used for workshops and educational purposes, went up in flames.

It is believed the incident was arson and police are asking for anyone with any information to contact them.

On their arrival, Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service noted seeing three hooded people dressed in black on e-scooters in the area.

It is believed these people may be able to help police with their enquiries.

The fire service says the timber-framed building was completely destroyed by fire.

Steven Hearn, head of collections and interpretations at the museum said he was saddened and frustrated to hear the news.

“The museum is so well loved by the public so its s a real shame,” said Mr Hearn.

“Open-air museums are susceptible to vandalism but now it has escalated to arson.

“The museum is still in the recovery phase after Covid, and we rely totally on donations and admission fees.

“This incident detracts from the essential work we are currently undertaking to enhance the Museum's resilience.”

This is not the first time the museum has been the subject of shocking vandalism.

Back in May 2021, the museum was forced to close just months after reopening post-Covid pandemic as vandals caused significant damaged to its buildings – windows were smashed and plates and ornaments were broken.

More than £30,000 was raised by the public to get the museum back up and running.

Mr Hearn added: “The public were really generous last time vandalism happened and we will be putting an appeal out again.”

In the meantime, people can donate by visiting https://avoncroft.org.uk/make-a-donation.

The museum is set to open as normal this weekend, but no workshops can take place.

“We will have signage up to let people know what has happened and how they can help,” said Mr Hearn.

"I'd like to thank West Mercia Police and Bromsgrove fire brigade for their prompt attendance and support."

Investigating police officers are reviewing CCTV footage and are keen to speak to anyone who may have been in the area at the time of the fire.

Insp Rich Field from the Bromsgrove Safer Neighbourhood team said: “Fortunately no one was injured during the incident, we are appealing for anyone who was in the area at the time of the incident to please get in touch with us.

“We are also asking for people to check their dashcam footage from the area to see if they captured anyone leaving museum”.
