FIRE crews celebrated a job well done after managing to help an 86-stone horse back onto his feet after a fall near Bromsgrove.

Firefighters from Bromsgrove Fire Station and the large animal team from Bromyard Fire Station were called out on Saturday afternoon to help George, a 25-year-old cob horse, who had fallen in a building and was unable to get up.

The drama unfolded in Money Lane, Chadwich, and firefighters who were alerted at 3.42pm were at the scene for more than two hours.

A spokesperson for Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service said: “Using specialist equipment that we carry on the fire appliance for animal rescue, a plan was put in place to get George out of the building, then with the support of a local farmer and his tractor - George was lifted to his feet and after a short time he was able to stand on his own.”

After a full check over by a vet, George was given a clean bill of health and he has since been back out enjoying the grass.
