WEST Mercia Police are investigating a fatal collision on the A38 at Lydiate Ash between a blue Ford Focus and a white lorry which was parked in a layby.

The crash happened shortly after 5am this morning and resulted in a woman, who was a passenger in the car, being declared dead at the scene.

Two ambulance crews, a paramedic area support officer in a rapid response vehicle and a MERIT trauma team were called to the scene.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: “The woman was sadly confirmed dead at the scene. A man in his twenties who was in the car with her was initially trapped with numerous serious injuries.

“He was freed from the car and was given advanced treatments at the scene before being taken to the major trauma centre at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.”

The driver of the lorry was not injured.

The A38 between Lydiate Ash and Rubery was closed to allow for emergency services and drivers are still advised to avoid the area.

West Mercia Police are encouraging anyone who witnessed the incident or saw the manner in which the Ford Focus was being driven before the crash to contact them on 101, quoting incident 058s.
