A TALENTED young sculptor from How College in Bromsgrove is celebrating after one of his sculptures was placed in a therapeutic garden in Hereford.

Alexander Morrell, who works under the name of MR Xander, usually works manipulating images to edit together famous landmarks and graffiti tags.

However this sculpture came about through an art and design diploma course he has been studying at HoW College, where he was working to a brief of ‘street found objects’.

He said: “I have a passion for street art and cut life, I came across street sculptures, where artists up-cycle stuff to make sculptures.

“There was a junk yard in the back of college, and I went there and found bits of an old motor bike, the frame, body cover, wire and front lights. I put all these pieces together roughly and another idea came, Wasp.

After it was made it sat in college for a year and the art staff said to me they love it so much, but they can't keep it forever because I ran out of space in the workshop.”

Luckily for Alexander, a fellow sculptural artist Jack Russell, who works down in Hereford, had heard about the ‘Wasp’ sculpture and he suggested contacting the Butterfly Garden, an educational, therapeutic and recreational scheme, in Hereford which operates as a project for people dealing with disablement of any kind.

Jack added: “He was one of the first people who followed me on Facebook. He showed me his work and I always thought he had some skill.

“I have been in contact with Chris Evans at Dundry Nurseries for a while and have always admired what he has achieved with The Butterfly Garden. Chris loved the pictures of the wasp sculpture and said he had the perfect spot in the garden for it.”

The sculpture has now been installed in the Butterfly Garden for people to enjoy.
